The series of suicides of debt-ridden farmers is not stopping in Maharashtra.

New Delhi: There is a continuous debate on farmer suicide. Governments change but cases of farmer suicides do not end. Every government claims to be well-wishers of farmers, yet farmers are sacrificing their lives. Why are they being ignored? This is a big question. The big question is also how to end this neglect. 73 farmers in Chandrapur, Maharashtra in the last seven months Has committed suicide. This year, 1,567 donors have sacrificed their lives in Vidarbha. In Yavatmal, 82 farmers have committed suicide in 83 days. Farmers are still worried because first there was unseasonal rain and then after that it is not raining at all. Most of the farmers are still dependent on rain.

73 farmers committed suicide in Chandrapur, Maharashtra in the last seven months, 1,567 farmers committed suicide in Vidarbha this year.

According to NCRB data, 5,563 agricultural laborers committed suicide in 2021. This was 9% more than 2020, and 29% more than 2019. Maximum 1,424 agricultural laborers sacrificed their lives in Maharashtra. Whereas in Karnataka, 999 agricultural laborers committed suicide and in Andhra Pradesh, 584 committed suicide.  Actually, there is a need to understand who these agricultural laborers are.. These are the same farmers who leave farming and start working as laborers when there is no profit from their land, but even there they do not get much.

On average, seven farmers commit suicide every day in Maharashtra  According to a Times of India report, 830 farmers in Maharashtra have committed suicide between January and April. On an average, seven farmers committed suicide every day. Of the 830 suicide cases, the government considered 283 cases eligible for compensation. A compensation of Rs 1 lakh is given. The compensation amount has not been increased after 2006.  Name was Jeevandas but the burden of debt of Rs 2.5 lakh forced him to end his life. 45 year old Jeevandas of Chandrapur used to cultivate paddy. Now the wife and children are destitute.  No help of any kind was received from the government

The wife of deceased farmer Jeevandas said, "I used to tell him again and again not to worry, we will gradually repay everyone's debt." But he committed suicide without thinking about me and my children. Till date I have not received any kind of help from the government. I request you to help my family.

Government figures show that the condition of farmers in Chandrapur, Maharashtra is bad. This year 73 farmers have sacrificed their lives. Among these, those who died in the last month i.e. July

15 farmers are included.

446 farmers committed suicide in Chandrapur in five years

73 farmers have committed suicide in Chandrapur in 7 months. From 2001 to 2023, 1148 cases were reported. Of these, there were 745 farmers who were to get government compensation. Of these, there were 329 farmers who were not entitled to compensation. There are 48 cases pending since December 2022. In the last five years, 446 farmers have sacrificed their lives.

This year, floods and rains in June-July have caused huge losses to farmers, while the month of August without rain is also scaring. The crops grown in a total of 54 thousand 514 hectares of 64 thousand 379 farmers of 852 villages of the district have been damaged.

Famine should be declared immediately in the affected districts

Shashi Sonavane, a farmer by profession and who raises the voice of the farmers of Maharashtra, is demanding that famine be declared in the affected area. He said, "The demand from the state and central government is that there are some districts in Maharashtra that you should immediately declare famine there. The governments which are avoiding declaring famine is wrong. You do a survey and immediately declare famine in the districts which are most affected. Take measures where famine-like situations appear. The government is holding a political meeting.

It is said that this year 1567 Annadatas have sacrificed their lives in Vidarbha. 82 farmers of Yavatmal have committed suicide in 83 days. Experts say that if there is no rain like this for the next 12-15 days, the condition of the farmers of Maharashtra is going to get worse.
